David 10 Colin 9 Nadine 8 Jon 2

First play for Colin. I got 3 points for not dumping. We played regular, probably for the last time because Jon convinced me why random is better.

Amun Re

Jon 45 Nadine 39 David 38 Haim 29 Colin 19

First play for Colin Haim. David was ahead of me after the first kingdom. Jon was first player, and kept it for 3 turns by bidding well. I was lucky that no one competed with me for most pyramids on my side of the river. I didn’t get a bonus power card until the 5th turn, but at least it was one I could use. I had 2 brick pyramid cards last turn so I couldn’t use them, I couldn’t use one the turn before because I didn’t have enough money. I didn’t know that bonus cards shown on provinces count towards the 9 card bonus. Jon didn’t know that winning the bribe makes you first player again. We changed the plus or minus 3 power card to also give you 3 coins, so we all played all the ones we got. Colin almost tied Jon for most pyramids, which would have put him at 24, but Jon didn’t have anything better to do with his bribe action so brought an extra brick. Jon: I assessed well in Amun Re, but I still got lucky that people bid what they bid, which gave me extra items. Also that David let me go last in the last turn.

Tichu

Jon/Haim 300, David/Nadine 300

David called but Haim blocked it; David had high cards but it wasn’t clear that he needed to use them so early. David called a 3 with the one, Haim had a 3 bomb. He had a straight to the Ace, so did David and I. -50 50. Jon made a Tichu. I barely made a Tichu, David saved me with the dog, I was stuck with a 2, and he went out second. Jon made another Tichu, with an 11 card straight.

Ciao Sara and Lorenzo

Lorenzo is finishing up his post-doc here, they’re both leaving in the next few weeks for new jobs in Europe.

Suburbia

Jon 136 Gili 114 Nadine F 87

Gentes

Aaron 111 Nadine 81 Lorenzo 74 Sara 65

First play for Sara. First time for me without the preset starting cards. I was last, which is a handicap that should receive compensation, but I also should have played better. I made several mistakes in my favor, one I was able to undo when I noticed, but not the other one – I took items from all my buildings on one round, not just one from each area, and used the cubes. I may have played the cubes wrong which may compensate a bit, I forgot that I could use the eye cube action twice. Even if I legitimately came in second, I’m not so into the game. It’s fine, it’s clear what to do. But  frustrating to get blocked, you’re not supposed to have only one action available which is what happened to me, and Lorenzo took it before me. Lorenzo had a good card combination with two money multipliers. Aaron understands the game well and was ahead the whole time.

Nefarious Pioneers

Welcome back Aaron, proud father of a 3-month-old son. Nefarious was at my house because someone had returned it last week, it’s good I decided to bring it back instead of waiting.

R-Eco

Nadine 15 David 12

Dumping is -4, we both ended up dumping, David was ahead til he did.

Pioneer Days

Jon 67, Aaron 61, Haim 56, Gili 55

First play for all except Jon. They played with advanced characters.

Notre Dame

Nadine 68 Sarah 68 David 60

First play for Sarah. She went in Notre Dame each round, last round she was the only one, and by the end of the game got 2 extra victory points from the garden. David had 7 in the victory point sector by the end, I thought he’d catch up but he didn’t. I got the extra victory point in the first round which helped. Sarah asked David for advice on passing cards and selecting actions when she wasn’t sure which was best.

Nefarious

Jon 21 Nadine 15+ David 15 Haim 15   Sarah 14

I had the most money so won the tie for second. First play for Sarah. Jon did a good job keeping 5 cards which gave him 5 points with the twist. We kept losing cards from inventions. The other twist was you lost a minion if you don’t have as many inventions as minons, we also lost minions from inventions.

Suburbia with a view

We met at Jon’s new place, which looks great for game days, with a huge balcony overlooking Jerusalem.

New Magic

Magic

David+, Jon

Jon: David and I change our play rules from what we have been doing for many years.

  • We used Winston draft instead of Rochester draft. It gives each play less information about the other player’s cards. It was good, and I think we will use it for a while.
  • We eliminated the hack I created for balancing mana issues, and instead used a more forgiving and dramatic version of the new mulligan rules. I mulliganed once using this system.
  • We eliminated house rules we had about multiples of the same card. At the same time, I removed the cards that we don’t play with, such as equipment and other powerful or specialized cards.
  • We retained the house rule to eliminate the word “snow-covered” from all texts.
  • We added the rule to change “gate” to “non-basic land”.
  • We played with a selection of the new 2500 cards I acquired.

Lots of flyers, and we both drafted similar cards. David went BWg, and I went BWu. In both games, David won a close victory.

Five Tribes

Nadine 214, Haim 174, Ariel 165

First play for Ariel, and Haim didn’t remember his one play. They both caught on well. There were very high point Djinns available, so they bought a lot, which made even more interesting Djinns com out, more than I’ve seen in other games, I didn’t get any Djinns but they each had around 5. I collected cards, at first without competition. Ariel realized I was getting a whole set, and took two cards I needed to block me which was a good move. I decided to get cards for my second set, but then was able to get the 9th card I needed. I also had the most yellows. They had too many Djinns to take advantage of them all, but did use them. Haim got the 15 tile from the Djinn that let him place anywhere, he got 5 points for trees, money for assassinations, and benefits from meeples he assassinated. Because I was collecting cards I had 4 slaves to add to blue meeples to get 24 one turn. They liked the game.

Concordia

Jon 145, David 136, Gili 91

First play for Gili. Jon: David went with cloth again, which is strong. I went with bricks and diversity, which is harder but my only choice in third position.

R-Eco

Nadine 16, Ariel 2, Haim 2

First play for Ariel, Haim hadn’t played much. I started with 3 blue cards, one a double, and had a lot of luck during the game. I didn’t dump, Ariel dumped a little, Haim a lot.

Tichu

David / Haim 1000+, Jon / Nadine around 500

I made a few mistakes, like not passing once to let Jon go out with his one card. Jon missed a GT that he called because we were behind, he almost made it; then he called and made one. I missed one of the Tichus I called. Jon was surprised on a GT that I didn’t have the dog, because no one had passed it to him, Haim had kept it because it sometimes helps opponents. Jon and David explained not in the case of GT caller. Haim and David went out 1 2 once or twice.

Sukkot Games Day 5779

Thank you to everyone who brought tables, chairs, snacks and games, and helped set up and clear up. A special thank you to Gili for taking care of the dinner order; for future reference Burgers Bar completely messed up by not putting names on the burgers. And thank you to Lorenzo for the m&m’s!

Antike

I don’t have the scores.

Azul

Nadine 63, Rafi  54, Mishi  41

Mishi 79, Rafi  62, Nadine 48

I started teaching this; Jon objected and took over. This was the first time I played correctly. Rafi and Mishi liked the game, and wanted to play again once they understood how it worked.

First play for the other two.

Clans of Caledonia

Roi 173, Nadine 155, Binyamin 127, Mishi 115

We played with a few clans I haven’t played with: Roi delta discount, Nadine extra contracts, Binyamin extra guy and shipping, Mishi factory discount. Everyone took advantage of their abilities. First play for all of them.

Crokinole

Ben 145, Abie 25

Many more games were played.

Euphoria

Avi, Shalom and his kids.

Notre Dame

Avraham R  63, Nadine 57, Yosef B 32, Mishi 28

First play for them. Yosef and Mishi didn’t realize how important it was to not be overrun by rats too early in the game, and weren’t able to recover. I made one mistake which lost me the game – I took money in order to go the Notre Dame, but then realized I didn’t have a cube, and you can’t go in with cubes already used. Avraham did well, and eventually had 4 pieces in the park.

R-Eco

Nadine 14, Mishi 7,  Ophir 6, Rafi 2, Efi 2

Yosef B 16, Nadine 6, Lorenzo 6, Mishi 3

Everyone likes this as a filler, new to most of them.

Signorie

David 168, Lorenzo 167.5, Tzvi 145

An exciting finish, though I’m not sure you can have half points.

Tichu

Jon: I trounced David in half a Tichu game and then he trounced me in a whole game later. I trounced him because he overbid. He trounced me because he had all the good cards.

Tigris and Euphrates

Jon 11, Assaf, Tvi with around 6 and 7.

First play for them.

Trajan

Avi 123, Jon 105, Yochai 103, Assaf 82

Avi 14, David 8, Jon 6, Nadine 5

We played with random chip piles, which Jon thinks is better for some reason.

Village

Avi 62, Jon 52, David 50

Lewis & Clark

Aaron +7, Schnur -7 camp, Nadine -7 scout

First play for Schnur, who caught on and planned well, but Aaron focused on getting cards which worked well for him.

Spyrium

David 65, Avi 65, Jon 52

First play for David and Avi, who liked the game. No tiebreaker.

Dominion

Schnur 111, Aaron 88, Nadine 66

There were too many things I didn’t realize at the start, including that there were Colonies, which also makes the game much longer, Platinums, and attack cards that gave a lot of useless cards. With the longer game and useless cards, I needed to have more (or any actually) trashing cards, which meant more cards giving actions to support them; and work on buying the higher value money and victory point cards. If I had bought trashing and action cards, it aso would have limited the number that the others were able to buy. Each individual card didn’t seem worth it compared to a silver, but a money strategy doesn’t work in this type of game. The Bishop, in addition to letting you trash, give victory points that don’t clog up your deck, which the others used effectively. So I ended up with a really bad deck for a long game. The only benefit was that it blocked Aaron when he used an attack cards and wanted me to reveal action cards, those attack cards worked much better for Schnur, who had Aaron as his left hand opponent. Schnur and Aaron are also extremely experienced Dominion players.
